Galax High School was recently awarded a banner for being recognized as a designated Heart Safe School through Project ADAM and the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. GHS met all 14 quality standards as outlined by the Project ADAM checklist. These standards include having a designated and trained response team, a cardiac response plan, AED’s placed for easy and timely access with clear signage, and much more. Being designated “heart safe” means the staff is prepared to respond to a cardiac emergency and possibly save a life.
Each year more than 350,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur in the United States. Unfortunately, approximately 90% of those do not survive. In order to increase the chances of survival, immediate response to a cardiac emergency is required.
“Currently, over 200 lives have been saved through Project ADAM affiliate programs in which an appropriate and timely response was enacted following a sudden cardiac arrest” (projectadam.com). Project ADAM has equipped GHS with the tools we need to be more prepared than ever before in the event of such an emergency. Project ADAM is a nationwide program and has affiliate sites in 32 states.
